Place du Tertre

The meeting place of painters and cartoonists.
At n° 21, is located the Tourist information office.

At 19 was the head office of the Free Commune founded in 1870 by Jules Depaquit.

The day before Christmas 1898, Louis Renault drove his car to petrol up to the place du Tertre.

Founded in 1793 by Catherine Lemoine during the French revolution, this restaurant is one of the busiest places in Paris history. Danton met there with his disciples and it has left its imprint on the walls: "Buvons et mangeons car demain nous mourrons".
In 1814, the Cossacks were in Montmartre, and, not having the permission of their officers, they had a drink at "La mère Catherine" shouting "Bistro, bistro!" (Hurry, hurry). Thus was born at the Butte worthy ancestor of our Parisian "bistros".

The municipality of Montmartre was born in 1790. The National Assembly having decreed that would be created a municipality in every city, village or parish. At N° 3 was established the 1st city hall of the municipality. Félix Desportes ( 1763-1849 ) was the first mayor.

The restaurant La Bohême du Tertre, at n°2, in the corner of the place du Tertre and the rue du Mont-Cenis, is the former hotel Bouscarat where lived aroud 1909 the poet Gaston Couté. This place also had Pierre Mac Orlan, Jules Depaquit, Eric Satie as tenants.
